Loading Your Own Data
Adding data to DTV to compare against other data can be very powerful. There are 2 ways you can do this.
add data from your local computer (or desktop); and
from web data links that often can be provided by spatial teams or data sharing portals.
To add data, choose ‘Upload' and then select 'My Data’ in the pop-up window to see the upload options.
Local data
Click the upload function to take you to a panel to find the data stored on your machine or local network. Hit browse, and then search for the data on your local/desktop files. Add to the map.
PRO TIP – the data needs to be spatial. If it isn’t, and it has no LAT/LONG info, then it might load to DTV but you will see no points on the map to compare. Spatial data means there is some reference to a LAT/LONG or location in the data.
PRO TIP – the format of your data doesn’t need to be a typical spatial format (like CSV), but it does need to be compatible with DTV. All the formats that DTV can use are in the drop-down list. If it doesn’t work, it might not be compatible with DTV and will need a format change.
PRO TIP – The data loaded into DTV will not save into DTV. This means it is not a permanent dataset of DTV and only you can load it from your PC. This is a security feature which protects your data and means that each time you wish to use the data, you will have to use the upload function again to load, and if you share this map view, the other person will not be able to see this data.
Adding Web data
Adding web data works very similar to adding Local data. The difference is the source of the data.
What you will need to know about the web data is what type of format is being shared. The drop-down selection will provide you with a series of different compatible formats that DTV can use.
Example: Using Public Records - Office of Victoria (PROV) MapWarper Historical Maps
As an example of a web data upload, use web data, here are some instructions on how to get to a valuable web link that you can use:
Browse to: https://mapwarper.prov.vic.gov.au/maps/geosearch?show_warped=1
How to add a map from Map Warper:
· Select ‘Find Maps by Location’ tab
· On the locator map, zoom to an area of interest. In this example - Phillip Island
· Click on the map names to the left, to see what area the individual maps cover.
· Select ‘Open Map’ on one you wish to view.
Once the map is open select ‘Export’ to get the required URL.
· In the Export tab under ‘Map Services’ you will want to copy the WMS link. Right click on ‘WMS: WMS Capabilities’ and copy the link address.
Back in the DTV platform, select ‘Upload’ and then ‘Add web data’ within the My Data tab
At Step 1, as the copied URL is a WMS service, select ‘Web Map Service (WMS) server’ from the drop-down list, then at Step 2 paste in the copied URL and click ‘Add”.
9. The 'My Data' catalogue will open, and the parent data layer will be added, expand the parent layer and press the + symbol to the right of the layer to add it to the map, now press Done to close the Upload window.
The data layer will now display in the workbench panel, and in the mapping interface. Click on ‘Ideal Zoom’ to zoom to the loaded map layer.
PRO TIP - If a link does not work, it may not be a compatible format type.
